On September 2, 2014, STAND UP convened African-American community leaders at Fisk University in Nashville to engage in frank dialogue about the achievement gap in America’s public schools, in Tennessee’s public schools, and in Nashville’s public schools. STAND UP founder and event moderator Mayor Kevin Johnson asked the nearly 100 participants to reflect on the question: Is education the civil rights issue of our time?
